Frequently Asked Questions

It is recommended that you make an appointment with a hearing professional for an consultation, evaluation, and hearing test. Lane “Custom” Hearing offers this entire process free of charge! Call now for a free consultation! 540-785-0999

A full evaluation normally takes about 1 hour. The consultation portion is for the purpose of gaining some background information on the patient and specifics about the hearing loss and history. The ears will be examined for conditions such as wax, infection, redness, pressure on the eardrum and scar tissue. If the ears are clear, a full audiological evaluation is then run. This consists of Air conduction and bone conduction testing, as well as pure tone threshold testing, MCL and UCL testing. These tests will tell us if you have a loss, which ears, and how severe. This will be helpful in determining the proper method and type of correction to use.

With Lane, the full evaluation process and testing is free. 20 years ago we decided to drop the testing charges to enable the community to be evaluated without fear of being charged. Concern over the price was preventing some from addressing their hearing loss.

There are several causes of hearing loss. The main ones include excessive volume of noise, infections of the ears, genetics, birth defects, the “maturing process” and reaction to drugs.

There are 3 types of hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss, conductive hearing loss and mixed hearing loss. Today, most people by the age of 50 will develope some type of hearing impairment.
